The Early Years

Terry Fox was born on July 28, 1958, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was an active child who loved playing sports, especially basketball and running. In 1977, at the age of 18, Terry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The cancer had spread to his right leg, and doctors were forced to amputate it above the knee.

Terry was devastated by the loss of his leg, but he refused to let it stop him from living his life. He continued to play basketball and run, using a prosthetic leg. In 1980, Terry decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his run the Marathon of Hope.

The Marathon of Hope

Terry began his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980, in St. John's, Newfoundland. He ran an average of 26 miles per day, and quickly became a national hero. Canadians from all walks of life came out to support Terry, and donations poured in.

However, Terry's run was cut short in September 1980, when the cancer spread to his lungs. He was forced to stop running after completing 3,339 miles. Despite the setback, Terry's Marathon of Hope had raised over $24 million for cancer research.

Terry's Legacy

Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981, at the age of 22. However, his legacy continues to live on. The Terry Fox Foundation, which was founded in 1988, has raised over $800 million for cancer research. The foundation also supports a variety of programs that help people with cancer, including research, patient support, and education.

Terry Fox is an inspiration to people all over the world. His story is a reminder that anything is possible if you have the courage to try. Terry's legacy will continue to inspire people for generations to come.
