Groucho and Me: The Story of My Friendship with Groucho Marx is a memoir by Groucho Marx's friend and writing partner, Arthur Sheekman. The book is a personal account of Sheekman's relationship with Marx, and it provides insights into Marx's personality and career.

Sheekman first met Marx in 1929, when they were both working on the Broadway musical Animal Crackers. Sheekman was immediately impressed by Marx's wit and intelligence, and the two men quickly became friends. Over the next several years, Sheekman and Marx collaborated on a number of projects, including the films Duck Soup (1933),A Night at the Opera (1935),and A Day at the Races (1937).

In Groucho and Me, Sheekman paints a vivid portrait of Marx as a complex and contradictory figure. Marx was a brilliant comedian, but he was also a deeply insecure man. He was a loyal friend, but he could also be cruel and dismissive. Sheekman's memoir provides a unique glimpse into the life of one of the most iconic comedians of all time.

The Early Years

Julius Henry Marx was born in New York City on October 2, 1890. He was the fifth of six children born to German Jewish immigrants Simon Marx and Minnie Schönberg.

Marx's father was a tailor, and his mother was a homemaker. The family was poor, and they lived in a small apartment on the Lower East Side. Marx's childhood was marked by poverty and hardship.

In 1924, the Marx Brothers made their Broadway debut in the musical I'll Say She Is. The show was a huge success, and it helped to launch the Marx Brothers' film career.

The Film Years

The Marx Brothers made their first film, The Cocoanuts, in 1929. The film was a box office success, and it helped to make the Marx Brothers one of the most popular comedy teams in the world.

Over the next several years, the Marx Brothers made a number of classic films, including Duck Soup (1933),A Night at the Opera (1935),and A Day at the Races (1937).

Marx's films are known for their clever writing, witty dialogue, and slapstick humor. Marx was a master of physical comedy, and he was able to get laughs from even the simplest of situations.

The Later Years

The Marx Brothers made their last film together in 1949. After that, Marx continued to work as a solo performer. He appeared in a number of films and television shows, and he also wrote several books.

Marx died in Los Angeles on August 19, 1977. He was 86 years old.
