Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Petra is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller. Summer temperatures can soar, making exploration uncomfortable, while winter nights can be cold.

Getting There: Petra is located in southern Jordan, approximately 260 kilometers from Amman, the capital city. The nearest airport is Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman, from where you can take a bus or taxi to Petra.

Accommodation: Petra offers a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, from luxury hotels to guesthouses and budget hostels. Most hotels are located in the town of Wadi Musa, just outside the main entrance to Petra.

Exploring Petra

The Siq: Your journey into Petra begins through the Siq, a narrow gorge that winds its way through towering sandstone cliffs. As you walk along the Siq, the walls close in around you, creating a sense of anticipation and wonder. The Siq culminates in a dramatic reveal of the Treasury, Petra's most iconic structure.

The Treasury: The Treasury, also known as Al-Khazneh, is the most famous building in Petra. Its elaborate facade, carved into the sheer rock face, is a masterpiece of Nabatean architecture. The Treasury is believed to have been a royal tomb or treasury, but its true purpose remains a mystery.

The Monastery: A short hike up from the Treasury, the Monastery is another impressive structure worth exploring. Its massive facade, even larger than the Treasury's, is adorned with intricate carvings and columns. The Monastery is thought to have served as a temple or palace.

Other Attractions: In addition to the Treasury and the Monastery, Petra is home to numerous other attractions, including:

  • The Street of Facades: A colonnaded avenue lined with elaborate facades carved into the rock.
  • The Royal Tombs: A series of opulent tombs carved into the cliffs above the Treasury.
  • The Amphitheater: A large Roman-style amphitheater that could seat up to 8,000 spectators.
  • The High Place of Sacrifice: A sacred site atop a hill overlooking the city, where the Nabataeans performed rituals.

History and Culture of Petra

The Nabataeans, an Arab civilization, established Petra as their capital in the 1st century BC. They were skilled traders and engineers, and their wealth and prosperity are evident in the elaborate architecture of Petra. Petra's strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes made it a major hub for the spice trade and other goods.

In the 6th century AD, Petra was conquered by the Romans, who added their own architectural touches to the city. By the 12th century, however, Petra had been abandoned and lost to the desert sands. It was rediscovered by Western explorers in the 19th century and has since become one of the world's most popular tourist destinations.

Tips for Visiting Petra

* Allow at least two days to explore Petra, as there is much to see and do. * Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be ng a lot of walking. * Bring plenty of water, especially if visiting during the summer. * Be aware of the heat and dress accordingly. * Hire a local guide to learn more about the history and culture of Petra. * Respect the ancient ruins and do not climb or damage them.

Petra, the lost city of Jordan, is an unforgettable destination that will transport you back in time. With its breathtaking beauty, rich history, and fascinating culture, Petra is a must-see for any traveler. Whether you are a history buff, an adventure seeker, or simply looking for an extraordinary experience, Petra has something to offer everyone.
