Walt Disney was an American entrepreneur, animator, voice actor and film producer. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. Disney is famous for his creation of Mickey Mouse and other popular animated characters.

Early Life and Career

Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the fourth of five children born to Elias Disney, a carpenter, and Flora Call Disney. Disney developed an early interest in art and drawing and began taking art classes at the Chicago Art Institute at the age of 14. In 1917, he dropped out of high school to join the Army during World War I, but he was rejected because he was underage. He then worked for a brief time as a commercial artist in Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Hollywood in 1923.

In Hollywood, Disney joined the Laugh-O-Gram Studio, where he met animator Ub Iwerks. Together, they created a series of short cartoons starring a character named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. However, the studio went bankrupt in 1923, and Disney and Iwerks lost the rights to Oswald.

Mickey Mouse and the Early Years

Undeterred, Disney and Iwerks created a new character, Mickey Mouse, in 1928. Mickey Mouse starred in a series of short cartoons that were distributed by Columbia Pictures. The cartoons were a huge success, and Mickey Mouse soon became one of the most popular characters in the world.

In 1937, Disney released his first full-length animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The film was a huge success and helped to establish Disney as a major force in the film industry. Over the next few decades, Disney released a number of other classic animated films, including Pinocchio (1940),Fantasia (1940),Dumbo (1941),Bambi (1942),Cinderella (1950),and Peter Pan (1953).

Later Years and Legacy

In addition to his animated films, Disney also founded several theme parks, including Disneyland in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. He also created the Disney Channel, a cable television network that features animated and live-action programming for children and families.

Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, at the age of 65. He left behind a legacy of creativity and innovation that has had a profound impact on the world of entertainment.
