Hugh Pendexter (1865-1935) was an American author and journalist who wrote over 300 novels and short stories, mostly set in the American Old West and the Civil War. Pendexter was born in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, but moved to the United States as a young man. He served as a scout for the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and his experiences during the war would later provide inspiration for many of his novels.

Early Life and Career

Hugh Pendexter was born on June 1, 1865, in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. His parents were both American citizens, and Pendexter moved to the United States with his family when he was eight years old. Pendexter grew up in Vermont and Massachusetts, and attended Dartmouth College for two years. He left Dartmouth to pursue a career in journalism, and worked as a reporter for several newspapers in New York City and Boston.

In 1889, Pendexter traveled west to Colorado, where he worked as a cowboy and a miner. He also began writing short stories and novels, and his first novel, The Adventures of a Tenderfoot, was published in 1890. Pendexter's early novels were mostly set in the American West, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented writer of Western fiction.

Civil War Service

In 1898, the United States declared war on Spain. Pendexter, who was a staunch supporter of the American cause, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a scout for the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Pendexter saw action in Cuba, and his experiences during the war would later provide inspiration for many of his novels.

After the Spanish-American War, Pendexter returned to the United States and continued to write Western fiction. However, he also began to write novels set during the Civil War. Pendexter's Civil War novels were praised for their historical accuracy and their vivid depictions of the battles and campaigns of the war. Pendexter's most famous Civil War novel, The Cavaliers, was published in 1912 and became a bestseller.

Later Years

In the 1920s, Pendexter retired from writing and moved to Florida. He continued to write occasional short stories and articles, but he never published another novel. Pendexter died in Orlando, Florida, on December 12, 1935.

Legacy

Hugh Pendexter was one of the most prolific and popular writers of Western and Civil War fiction of his era. His novels were praised for their historical accuracy, their vivid descriptions of the battles and campaigns of the war, and their memorable characters. Pendexter's novels continue to be read and enjoyed by readers today.
